Do you think nanotechnology will invade your privacy?

14 comments Print Me

Scientists are creating materials on the scale of atoms and molecules. They say this nanotechnology – this science of the very small – could revolutionize how human society feeds itself, quenches its thirst, heals its sick, communicates and much more.

But with great potential comes great responsibility.

Technology like video cameras is already invading our privacy. I think it’s something we are going to have to deal with and get used to, whether we like it or not.

I don’t know about nanotechnology, but it does seem like our personal privacy is being invaded more and more. Is there anything that can be done? It seems like one of those things that’s out of our control, like how expensive everything is, and trash everywhere.

We have a poll on public opinion of nanotech that ran at the Science Museum of Minnesota where we asked a question similar to this. The options are admittedly limiting but still gives you an interesting picture of people’s opinion.

I can imagine no better way to destroy human freedom than to make bionanosenors that can be put into, onto, and around humans that will literally monitor and control them , body, mind, and soul, allowing them \”no rest day or night\”! Where is freedom when everything a person does, or thinks, will be monitored and controlled 24/7/365? Imagine the power over humanity that the elite of the global technocracy will have through this technology! Imagine the members of this global technocracy making up their own laws on what is right and what is wrong, and then enforcing those laws upon everyone, even though these laws oppose the LAWS OF GOD! Imagine those who oppose the spread of this technology being arrested, imprisoned, tortured, and KILLED because they are made a \”threat\” in the minds of the masses, through the use of the \”media\”, which now includes supercomputers, quantum computers, and bionanotechnology! Humanity has learned nothing from the past! They have
repeated their mistakes over and over again in every \”civilization\”, and they are doing it again! With humanity, power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely! Abomination and desolation will be the results!

if these kinds of sensors are on the way, we should look ahead and work out some policies so that all the information can not be controlled, or owned by a single person or group. I don’t think we should just give up and say we’re doomed.

Who gets to know all this information? That is what is scary to me. It is a lot of power if you are in control of all this information

I agree with lesterette. Our privacy is already being invaded with video cameras everywhere and the internet and such. We need to make sure our laws are up to date with our technology. that is the only way we are going to get any protection as individual citizans.

    a David Brin fan says:

I think “anonymous” is right that soon everything a person does, and thinks, will be monitored and controlled 24/7/365, and that the government (which I suppose will be a world government by then) may create an evil, totalitarian world order by taking advantage of their greater access to, and greater permission to use, fantastic surveillance technology. The world may very soon become like in Orwell’s 1984 and far worse.

I think the best way to prevent that from happening is to demand, and make sure we get, just as much access to, and right to use, all of that surveillance technology, as our governments do. David Brin suggests this in his book “The Transparent Society”. In fact, I think the leaders or the world should be the very first to be microchipped, checked with the most updated and reliable lie detectors and subject to camera surveillance 24/7/365 that is broadcasted for every human being to see exactly what they are doing all the time.

With this strategy, we will all lose all of our privacy, and not only the government but your neighbour and everyone else too will be able to watch your every move and read your every thought. That’s the downside. But at least this way we can prevent a totalitarian world order from becoming reality. The answer to the question “Who is to watch the watchers?” is “All of us!”

I absolutely agree that total power corrupts totally. So we must do all we can to even out the huge power gap between government and people. We should make all kinds of power, especially surveillance power, distributed as equally as possible to all human beings.

In the nanoweapon era, terrorists are going to be the biggest threat, of course, but we don’t need governments to protect us from terrorists. We can do that ourselves, if equipped with the same tools as our governments. In fact, we would do it much more reliably, as we are a much greater number of people than our government.

One thing is sure. If any “powers that be” wanted to invade our privacy, nanotechnology would help them do that.

It’s about working with materials on the scale of molecules …

But I believe there are many responsible scientists working in this area, who are aware of nanotech’s potential use for nefarious purposes. Many people are working hard to try to be sure the public is staying informed about this technology. That’s a good thing!

Yeah, and when they put us all into forced labor camps and create a society of oppression that makes China look like Disneyland, I guess that’s something we are going to have to deal with, too, whether we like it or not. Well, at least they can’t make use like it…or can they? Well, maybe they can, but will they?

Now is the time to insist that legislation be enacted to protect the freedom and privacy of individuals. Big Brother is here now, but it is still young enough that we can kill it. If we let it grow, it may become unbeatable without help from insiders.

The government of the United States is engaged in a campaign of terror against the citizens of the country. The goal is to convince us all to give up our freedom and privacy for the “security” provided by the government. I don’t think I want that kind of security.

Our privacy is allready invaded by big brother and all the cameras that are all across america.

This technology will change the future of the health industry as well as other we cannot even imagine.

I remember seeing an Outlimits where a gentleman had NanoBots that could be put inside humans to attack disease and all kinds of other things is was a cool idea.

To know that this is really happening is amazing.

Ironically, it may be greed and capitalism that saves us – that keeps the surveillance control spread all around. Cuz as soon as techno-scientists figure how how to make this stuff so small and cheap, someone is going to market it to make $$money$$, and sell it to folks like you and me.

These advances in technology that create an invation of privacy, and therefore an erosion of our freedom, are very scary. Thinking about it makes me want to escape by moving to a less advanced country away from technology and live a more basic life.
