Attention race fans: which leatherback sea turtle will be the first to cross the ocean?
(April 5) The Great Turtle Race will take place from April 16 to April 29 in a global bid to raise awareness and funds for the critically endangered leatherback turtle.
Starting today, you can go online and choose which of the eleven turtles is your favorite to win. Then watch your turtle’s progress from its nesting site in Costa Rica as it “races” all the way to its feeding areas south of the Galapagos Islands.

The sponsored turtles have been equipped with satellite tags, so during the race, viewers can follow each turtle’s journey and learn about the obstacles it will face along the way–including fishing lines, nets, and trawls; plastic bags (often mistaken for jellyfish, the leatherback’s primary food source) and other marine debris; and many other human–created hazards.

Besides the opportunity to choose a favorite, the site includes an interactive animation of the habitats and hazards along the leatherbacks’ journey; original blogs by scientists, students, and a character known as Mr. Leatherback who are following the race; and Great Turtle Race educational curriculum for teachers to incorporate the event into lesson plans.

Thank you for recognizing the Great Turtle Race on your website. This will be an exciting race and will raise awareness of the plight of the Pacific leatherback sea turtle.
I am one of the co-founders of the Great Turtle Race and a Board Member of The Leatherback Trust. I have been deploying satellite tags on the leatherbacks at Playa Grande since 2004 as part of my PhD research at Stanford University. I would be very happy to tell you more about our work if you have any questions.

“The great turtle race” o “La Gran Carrera de Tortugas”, ¡no importa el nombre!, pues sea en español o en inglés a nosotros, los costarricenses, nos avergüenza ante el mundo. Darle un uso comercial a las tortugas baula, casi al borde de la extinción no solo en Costa Rica sino en el mundo, es inaceptable. La temporada de desove, concluida en febrero, solo trajo al Parque Nacional Marino las Baulas, 58 tortugas (¡hace poco más de 10 años el número superaba las 1500!) y ahora resulta, que para que se anuncien empresas como una fábrica de llantas china, por ejemplo, se les molesta y, se engaña a la gente haciéndole creer que las 11 tortugas saldrán de Playa Grande el lunes 16 de enero…
Pero eso no es lo que más molesta. Se ha demostrado que el transmisor de señales para ser captadas por el satélite, reduce su movilidad, tanto en su desplazamiento horizontal como cuando se sumergen en busca de alimento. ¿Es esa una forma razonable de protegerlas? ¿Molestándolas?
Conservation International y The Leatherback Trust ya nos tienen cansados con sus “iniciativas”. Hace unos años The Leatherback Trust llevó a cabo “experimentos” en los que se decapitaron cientos de tortuguitas apenas saliendo de sus nidos. Así funciona esa organización conservacionista. Por eso, muchos en Costa Rica, la rechazamos.
El asunto se ha denunciado ante el Ministerio del Ambiente de Costa Rica, pues el Director de las áreas de conservación NO sabía nada de esa bochornosa carrera. Lo mejor que puede hacer Yahoo y demás patrocinadores, es sacarla de la web y prestarle más atención a cosas semejantes en el futuro, en vista de los dividendos negativos que les deja. Todo es una vergúenza.

Corrección a mi anterior mensaje sobre la Gran Carrera de la Vergüenza: ya están en altamar, camino a los Galápagos, por la ruta bien conocida. Corren (?) Freedom, Genevieve,Champiro, Drexelina, Saphira, Sundae, Windy, Billie, Turttlecity and Purple Lightning… ¡Qué nombres más dulces! Es como estar mirando Discovery Channel para niños.

así lo anuncianes el lunes 16 de abril.¿Creerán de verdad que están haciendo algo que merece un premio o una felicitación? ¿Serán tan egocentristas que así lo piensan?

STEPHEN COLBERT SEA TURTLE JOINS THE GREAT TURTLE RACE
- Student Researchers Name Colossal Leatherback in Honor of Their Hero –
April 10, 2007-An eleventh turtle named Stephanie Colburtle has joined competitors Yahoo!, Travelocity, Plantronics, West Marine, Dreyer’s Ice Cream and other sponsors in The Great Turtle Race, a unique international sea turtle conservation event that will take place online from April 16 to April 29 in a global bid to raise awareness and funds for the critically endangered leatherback turtle.
The turtle was named in honor of television comedian Stephen Colbert by student researchers at Playa Grande, Costa Rica, which is the most important nesting site for leatherback sea turtles in the Pacific Ocean and the “starting line” for The Great Turtle Race.
“I’m a huge fan of shelled reptiles,” said Colbert, announcing The Great Turtle Race on his Comedy Central show, Colbert Report. “Normally, I’m no endangered species hugger…but this year, nation, one of those 11 turtles is named after me: Stephanie Colburtle the turtle.”
“Folks, there’s my beautiful adopted daughter!” he said, showing a photograph of a leatherback turtle on the screen.
“In Costa Rica, the students were up all night with me waiting for turtles to arrive on the beach at Playa Grande,” recalls George Shillinger, a co-founder of The Great Turtle Race and researcher at Stanford University’s Tagging of Pacific Predators program. “We talked about our favorite late-night shows, and shortly thereafter a massive ambassador for the species emerged from the sea. She was magnificent, and we decided to name her after Stephen Colbert. We call her Stephanie Colburtle.”
Colbert also remarked, “Next to an eagle, a turtle is a perfect animal to represent me,” later referring to leatherbacks as “eagles of the sea.” Stephanie Colburtle is one of the largest leatherbacks ever recorded nesting at Playa Grande. Her shell is 1.66 meters (almost 5.5 feet) long.
Well, I had been rooting for Sundae, because as we all know, “slow and creamy wins the race”, but this poses a difficult decision in my loyalties. What do I like better: Ice cream or Stephen Colbert?
