Alexandra Cousteau: I think the important thing for young people to know about the ocean is that it is a magical place. It is the last frontier that we have on this planet to explore.
You’re listening to National Geographic Emerging Explorer Alexandra Cousteau.
Alexandra Cousteau: We need to know what’s down there, and there’s new species discovered every day, things that are beyond imagining, that we’re finding there.
Cousteau is cofounder of EarthEcho, which works to restore and protect our planet’s freshwater and oceans. She’s featured on an episode of the PBS KIDS! television series – also featuring the animated chimp Curious George – about the wonders of coral reefs.
Alexandra Cousteau: I’ll spend an entire dive just sitting in front of one coral reef, one coral head and look at the community of life that lives on that coral head, whether it’s little fish, that are guarding their little patch of reef, and the little crabs, the squid, and star fish, and the snails and all of them are living. So large and small, the life in the ocean fascinates me.
And although one person might seem small compared to the vastness of the sea…
Alexandra Cousteau: Everything we do makes a difference. and not only the actions you take, but the voice that you have, in terms of getting your family and your friends and your community involved, we can all be spokespeople for the environment.
