Activity 2: Old-Growth Forests
Do we have to choose between preserving an ecosystem and maintaining jobs and a supply of forest products? Is it possible to do both? The controversy over old-growth forests reflects many of the questions we currently face about the use of our public forests. Investigating old-growth issues can introduce students to many of these tough questions and varying viewpoints. After completing this activity, students will be able to use the skills they have developed to explore other complex environmental issues. They will also discover that there are no simple answers to such complex situations.
